Methodism and the Wesleys....

• Experience where it all began, the beautiful little market town of Epworth, where Samuel Wesley was rector from 1695 until his death 48 years later. Visit the Old Rectory, home to the Wesleys where Samuel and Susanna raised their children, and from where on the evening of 9th February 1709 the five year old John was plucked like a brand from the burning after a fire in the Rectory corn store spread to the house.We will visit the Wesley Memorial Church and attend a service if you wished.



• Walk up the sloping, tree lined lane to St Andrew's Church were Samuel was rector and touch his tomb from which John preached in 1742 when, on his return to Epworth, he was denied access to the church, doing far more good, he claimed, to those listening than he ever did by preaching from his fathers pulpit!

• Drive to Wroot, a hamlet in the flat, dark peatlands of the Lincolnshire/Yorkshire border where John acted as curate in 1726 just after he was elected a Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford.

• We will then travel the triangle of the country covered by John and Charles - defined by London, Bristol and Newcastle - and visit places associated with the men and their religion, lives and loves; chapels - the oldest and the finest; the Oxford colleges, the homes of their friends who helped build the Methodist Connexion; Where they lived, where they preached, where they were mobbed, where they died.

  From the comfort of our vehicle we can only wonder at the stamina and driving force which enabled these men to do such jouneys on foot or horseback!
