Drive the route the would-be pilgrims took in their first failed attempt to leave for a better life. Cross over into Lincolnshire and visit Gainsborough Old Hall, an immaculately preserved timber framed Manor House, built around 1460. In this old hall the Separatist Church was founded in 1602 and many of the Mayflower Pilgrims worshipped here secretly before their eventual escape to America. Sit under the hand-hewn rafters,were they would listen to a Separatist preacher, John Smyth. Take a short walk to the John Robinson Memorial Church, a plaque on the church was laid by T Bayard, American Ambassador to Britain in 1896. -
Enjoy a "big sky" drive over the rolling chalk hill of the Lincolnshire Wolds where the pilgrims fled to Boston to meet the captain who was to betray them.Stoop as you pass through the grilled doors of the tiny, dark and narrow cells below the Guildhall where the pilgrim leaders were imprisoned 400 years ago after their failed attempt to flee from Boston. -
Walk along the desolate east coast where both the failed and then successful attempts at leaving England took place.
